It really depends on the shoot and the photographer.  If the photographer is relaxed or just wants to experiment, I will often dig in to my mind to think up of things to do on my own.

Sometimes the photographer will have a specific idea in mind, and if I am completely behind their idea, I will just follow suit and play what ever role I need to for the camera.  Sometimes I will feel I can improve on the idea or make it more personal to me, and will collaborate and talk about the idea.

Ideally photo shoots are collaborations for me.  If the collaboration is not there, I will often introduce a rate because if I need to act a specific role, I will take it seriously enough to become a job.
